PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing copolyesters having strength necessary for a direct molded product, superior heat resistance and shock resistance, and high transparency; and copolyesters obtained thereby. SOLUTION: The method for producing copolyesters, which consist of aromatic dicarboxylic acid or a derivative thereof, aliphatic diol, and alicyclic diol represented by formula (I), includes at least: a process 1 of reacting the aromatic dicarboxylic acid or derivative thereof, the aliphatic diol, and the alicyclic diol represented by formula (I) together in a molten condition; and a process 2 of reacting the copolyester produced in the process 1 with diphenyl carbonate as a polymerization promotor for increasing intrinsic viscosity of the copolyester higher than that before the reaction with the polymerization promoter.
