摘要 A method of processing optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans of a subjects skin having a surface 8 comprising capturing a plurality of scans through the subjects skin, the scans representing an OCT signal in slices through the users skin in parallel planes, the scans being offset from one another along a direction perpendicular to the parallel planes. This stack of scans is then filtered to reduce or remove random noise using linear, e.g. Kalman filtering, and non-linear filtering e.g wavelet filtering intended to preserve edge features and produce a series of possible surface positions. These positions are then scored according to the probability that they represent a true skin surface and these are then processed to select a set of candidates representing a single surface. The candidates are then assessed for worthiness based on for example: uniformity, periodicity of variation and surface variance being within expected limits from known skin samples with insufficiently worthy candidates being rejected, the roughness of the skin surface may also be determined. Once the position of the surface 8 of the skin in each scan has been determined the scans are displayed to a user with an indication 9 indicative of a predetermined depth below the surface 8 of the skin visible to the user.
