The hybrid propulsion system 1 has an internal combustion engine 2, a gear box 3 having an input shaft 4 connectable to the engine and an output shaft 5 to drive a propeller. A first power drive and take off [10, fig. 3] is releasably connectable to the gear box input via a clutch 12A, and a second power drive and take off [30, fig. 3] are releasably connectable to the gear box output via a second clutch 32A. The power drive and take offs are relesably connected by connecting clutch 50. At least one motor/generator 21, 41 are connected the first and/or second power drive and take offs. A battery bank 60 is provided to power or be charged by the motor/generator(s). The internal combustion engine 2 may act as the major propulsion means and may be supplemented by the electric motor(s) 21, 41 or the engine 2 may be switched off and the vehicle is powered only via the motor(s). The system may be used to propel a sea going vessel such as a boat or ship. |
