<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display for improving a contrast without increase in an output voltage range of an image signal, and a method for driving the image display. <P>SOLUTION: After a potential of a counter electrode facing an electrode plate connected to an image signal line in a capacitive element for maintaining a potential corresponding to the image signal is increased to predetermined potential prior to supply of the image signal to the image signal line, the image signal is supplied to the image signal line. After the capacitive element maintains a potential corresponding to the image signal, the potential at the counter electrode plate side of the capacitive element is decreased to the previous potential.
