An electrochemical cell 10 useful as a gas sensor includes a working electrode 24 which comprises a porous support (membrane) whose surface carries a catalytically active substance and has been modified by a gas phase process (plasma deposition process) to increase the surface hydrophobicity and/or reduce the surface energy. The plasma process improves the membrane surface such that it is wetted by an electrolyte 18 to maintain a good level of liquid but the pores remain open and available to a gas being detected. |
