PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable detection of powder to be discarded even if a mixture ratio between nonmagnetic particles consisting only of toner and magnetic particles as powder such as toner to be discarded varies. SOLUTION: A detection device includes: a permeability sensor 301 disposed externally to a powder recovery container 201 used for recovering the powder in the state of facing an outer wall of a side of the powder recovery container 201; and a detection support member 310 that is disposed with the low end portion that is a free end hung inside the powder recovery container 201 so as to face an internal wall of the side the powder recovery container 201 with a space therebetween, the wall facing a detecting portion of the permeability sensor 301, and in which a magnetic material 313 is disposed at a position facing the detecting portion of the permeability sensor 301 so that the magnetic material 313 is shifted toward a direction approaching the detecting portion of the permeability sensor 301 as a result of the detection support member 310 being deformed at a position above the magnetic material 313 in the direction of the force of gravity as the pivot point, the deformation caused by a pressing force of the powder recovered inside the powder recovery container 201.
