摘要 <p>Embodiments of a system (450) that includes one or more integrated circuits are described. During operation of the system, an interface in the one or more integrated circuits receives video signals (412) associated with a video image and a brightness setting (414) of a light source which illuminates a display that displays the video image. Next, an extraction circuit (462), which is electrically coupled to the input interface, calculates a brightness metric associated with the video image based on the received video signals. Then, an analysis circuit (464), electrically coupled to the extraction circuit, analyzes the brightness metric to identify one or more subsets of the video image, and an intensity circuit (470), electrically coupled to the analysis circuit, determines an intensity setting (418) of the light source based on the brightness setting and a first portion of the brightness metric associated with one of the subsets of the video image. Note that this subset of the video image includes spatially varying visual information in the video image. Moreover, an output interface, electrically coupled to the intensity circuit, outputs the intensity setting of the light source.</p>
