<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically decide a cutting direction so as not to cause the lowering of working precision in preparing a program of finishing work in turning work. <P>SOLUTION: One element is acquired from a working shape. Whether or not a distance D in the X axis direction between its starting point and a terminal point is higher than a set value Ds is determined in case of a linear element. Additionally, whether an angle A made by the linear element and a Z axis is larger than a set angle Aa or not is determined. Programs are prepared by making the cutting direction opposite to the copying direction when the distance D is higher than the set value Ds ad the angle A is larger than the set angle Aa (S3 to S5, S7). In the same way, the cutting direction is made the copying direction when a circular arc radius R is higher than a set value Rs and an angle A of a straight line connecting a starting point and a terminal point of a circular arc and the Z axis is larger than a set angle Ab in case of a circular arc element, too (S9 to S11, S7). The cutting direction is automatically changed to the opposite direction and the program is prepared when stress in the draw-cutting direction is applied on a tool and there is possibility of lowering the working precision.
