PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multifunctional material that has a surface layer with improved corrosion resistance and hydrogen absorption resistance. SOLUTION: This material includes: a base substance 10; a surface layer formed thereon and composed of at least zirconium, zirconium alloy, zirconium oxide or zirconium alloy oxide; a platinum carbon dope oxide layer 13 provided at least on the surface side of the surface layer of the base substance and formed by doping the oxide of zirconium or zirconium alloy with at least one platinum group element selected from the platinum group elements composed of at least platinum, palladium, iridium, ruthenium, rhodium and osmium, and a carbon; and a metal oxide layer 14 of the metal containing at least one of platinum group element selected from the platinum group elements containing at least the platinum, palladium, iridium, ruthenium, rhodium and osmium, which is continuously formed on the platinum carbon dope oxide layer 13.
