PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary actuator capable of suppressing a failure in engagement between a planetary gear and a ring gear. SOLUTION: A shell member 6 comprises three housings, i.e., a front housing 60, a center housing 61, and a rear housing 62. The center housing 61 provided between the front housing 60 and rear housing 62 restricts radially outward displacement of the ring gear 30 over the entire outer periphery of the ring gear 30 by a ring hear holding inner wall 612. Consequently, when the planetary gear 31 revolves around a driving shaft 200 while engaging the ring gear 30, the center housing 61 supports the ring gear 30 at any revolution position thereof. Radially outward deformation of the ring gear 30 is therefore suppressed and a failure in engagement between the planetary gear 31 and ring gear 30 due to the deformation of the ring gear 30 is thereby suppressed.
