<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting device and a liquid crystal display device capable of realizing further improvement in front luminance. <P>SOLUTION: In the lighting device or a liquid crystal display device in which a prism sheet is arranged between an incidence side polarizing plate 6 and a light source 7, the prism sheet is arranged so that the ridgeline direction of the prism may become perpendicular or nearly perpendicular to a transmission axis of the incidence side polarizing plate. Light emitted from the light source 7 is transmitted through the prism sheet 11 and enters into the incidence side polarizing plate 6. Out of the light emitted from the prism sheet 11, among the polarized light vibrating in the ridgeline direction of the prism and the polarized light vibrating in the arrangement direction of the prism, the polarized light vibrating in the arrangement direction of the prism has a higher intensity of light than the polarized light vibrating in the ridgeline direction of the prism. Thereby, by aligning the transmission axis of the incidence side polarizing plate 6 in the arrangement direction of the prism, the front luminance of the lighting device and the liquid crystal display panel can be increased. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
