PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable power optical system or the like having excellent optical performance which can correct camera shake, and F-number of which is bright while having high power variation. SOLUTION: The variable power optical system ZL mounted in a digital single-lens reflex camera 1 or the like includes a first lens group G1 having positive refractive power, a second lens group G2 having negative refractive power, a third lens group G3 having positive refractive power, a fourth lens group G4 having negative refractive power, and a fifth lens group G5 having positive refractive power in order from an object side. At least a part of any lens group out of these lens groups is moved so as to have a component in a perpendicular direction to an optical axis. When power is varied from a wide angle end state to a telephoto end state, a space between the first lens group G1 and the second lens group G2 changes, a space between the second lens group G2 and the third lens group G3 changes, a space between the third lens group G3 and the fourth lens group G4 changes, and a space between the fourth lens group G4 and the fifth lens group G5 changes.
