PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical scanner that carries out a time-division scanning for reducing costs required for a light source and a control board to reduce the size of the device, and an image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: An optical scanner includes a light source 15, deflection means 7, and scanning optical systems 8a and 8b. The optical scanner is configured to carry out a time-division scanning of a plurality of scanned surfaces 11a and 11b with a light flux from the single light source 15. Each temporal interval between the scanning of the scanned surfaces 11a and 11b is not evenly divided, and light emission for adjusting the amount of light of the light source 15 is carried out at least in one of the segments where temporal interval is provided that is longer than the average value of the each temporal interval.
