In a computing environment, a method of determining a discrete application boundary, the method comprising: identifying one or more initial components of an application; identifying statically related components of the one or more initial components of the application by examining installer or uninstall data, one or more extension points of an operating system, or extension points of server registration; identifying dynamically related components of the one or more initial components of the application by accessing resource requests from the application; wherein identifying statically related components and identifying dynamically related components is performed iteratively according to a scope that specifies which application components are to be considered for inclusion in the application, the scope being dynamically adjustable to include more or fewer related components, the identifying comprising impliedly including at least one additional application component that is related to a dynamically discovered component; and identifying a discrete boundary for the application based on the one or more initial components, the statically related components and the dynamically related components.
