Disclosed are a method and an apparatus for generating an encryption and decryption key to protect applications. A method for generating an encryption and decryption key comprises the steps of extracting application identification information from an application existed in a server which distributes applications; of extracting user identification information from SIM card information of an apparatus having an application; generating a character line, a number line, or a random bite combination with respect to the application identification information and the user identification information; and generating an encryption and decryption key by applying a hash function to the text line, the number line, or the bite combination. An apparatus for generating an encryption key comprises a key generation logic unit to store rules for generating user identification information extracted from SIM card information of an apparatus storing an application and application identification information extracted from at least one file of the application; an encryption and decryption key generation unit to generate an encryption and decryption key based on the rule and the SIM card information; and a decryption key generation unit to generate a decryption key.
