PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device that suppresses blown out highlights.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes a first polarizing film 1, a first retardation layer 2, a liquid crystal layer 4, a second retardation layer 5, and a second polarizing film 6, in this order. The liquid crystal layer 4 has a VA mode with 4 domains or less; Re(550) and Rth(550) of the first and second retardation layers are within predetermined ranges; an angle formed by the slow axis of the first retardation layer 2 and the absorption axis of the first polarizing film 1 is 45°; the slow axis of the first retardation layer 2 is orthogonal to the in-plane slow axis of the liquid crystal layer 4 during application of a voltage; an angle formed by the slow axis of the second retardation layer 5 and the absorption axis of the second polarizing film 6 is 45°; the slow axis of the second retardation layer 5 is orthogonal to the slow axis of the first retardation layer 2; and a retardation (&Dgr;nd) of the liquid crystal layer 4 is 250 to 450 nm. |
