The present invention provides a cosmetic composition comprising a Persicaria thunbergii extract as an active ingredient for skin whitening. The cosmetic composition for skin whitening, comprising the Persicaria thunbergii extract as the active ingredient, inhibits tyrosinase which is an important enzyme for melanin synthesis mechanism and inhibits melanin synthesis, thereby having enhanced skin whitening effect. The cosmetic composition shows outstanding skin whitening effect when adding the cosmetic composition to a cosmetic base.
