ANTIMICROBIAL SOLID AND METHOD OF MAKING SAME

A solid material adapted to kill bacteria in planktonic, spore and biofilm states is lethal toward a wide spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria as well as other microbes. The solid material includes a significant amount of one or more surfactants entrained in a crosslinked polymeric network.

An article having at least one surface adapted to kill bacteria coming in contact therewith, said article comprising a substrate and, applied to at least on surface of said substrate, a solid antimicrobial coating that comprises a hydrophilic, crosslinked polymer network that comprises one or more polyelectrolytes and at least 0.03% by weight of one or more surfactants entrained in said polymer network, said coating being adapted to be effective when in contact with water.
