Methods and compositions to reduce immunogenicity of proteins are disclosed. Compositions comprising therapeutic proteins (such as Factor VIII or any other protein or peptide) complexed with liposomes comprising PS and PC (PS liposomes), or comprising PS, PI and PC and, optionally, cholesterol (PS/PI liposomes) may be used.

1. A method for inducing in an individual immune tolerance to a therapeutic protein comprising the steps of:
a) administering one or more times to the individual a first composition comprising the protein complexed to liposomes comprising i) phopatidylserine (PS) and phospatidylcholine (PC), or ii) phosphatidylserine (PS), phosphatidylinositol (PI), phosphatidylcholine (PC) and cholesterol; b) allowing immune tolerance to the protein to be developed in the individual; c) administering to the individual a second composition comprising the protein, wherein the protein in the second composition is not complexed to the liposomes of step a).
