System and method for determining the malfunctioning a of lighting systems (60) for public illumination and in particular for detecting the malfunctioning of ambient light detectors (30) which control said system. The system (and method) comprise means (10, 40) for calculating the power supplied to the lighting systems in a specific time range and it compares the detected power consumed with an expected (ideal) power which should be adsorbed by the lighting systems in the same time range during normal conditions. On the basis of the comparison a malfunctioning of the lighting systems can be estimated. |
