Provided in the present invention are a method and device for determining a precoding matrix indicator (PMI) as well as a user equipment and base station. The method comprises: the PMI is determined, where the PMI correspond to a precoding matrix, W, and the precoding matrix, W, satisfies either a first criterion, a second criterion or a third criterion; and the PMI is transmitted to the base station. Also provided in embodiments of the present invention are the corresponding device as well as the corresponding user equipment and base station. The technical solution provided in the embodiments of the present invention allows for effective control of beams in the horizontal direction and in the vertical direction and particularly of the beam shapes and beam directions of the beams.
