There is provided a near-eye device for augmenting a real world view. The near-eye device comprises a spatial light modulator LCOS SLM 507 comprising an array of phase modulating elements arranged to apply a phase delay distribution to incident light output by light source 50. The device further comprises a collimating lens 503 and beam splitter 505 located between the light source and SLM. A beam combiner 509 comprises a first optical input arranged to receive light 521 from the spatial light modulator and a second optical input for receiving a field of view of the real world 523. Light from inputs 521 and 523 are combined by beam combiner 509 and output as a beam 525 towards a viewer 513 who perceives the real world image augmented by phase-only holographic domain data representative of an image produced by the SLM. The hologram may be a Fourier or Fresnel hologram. |
