An object of the invention is to achieve improved heating of the exhaust gas purification apparatus without making the structure of a burner complex or bulky. At the time of raising the temperature of the exhaust gas purification apparatus 6, the burner 20 is caused to produce flame that extends from the interior of the burner combustion chamber to the interior of the exhaust passage 3 upstream of the exhaust gas purification apparatus 6 when the flow rate of the exhaust gas is not higher than a predetermined flow rate, and the burner 20 is caused to make the size of the flame produced in the interior of the exhaust passage 3 smaller than when it is determined that the flow rate of the exhaust gas is not higher than the predetermined flow rate or to produce flame only in the interior of the burner combustion chamber when it is determined that the flow rate of exhaust gas is higher than the predetermined flow rate.
