330,918. Natta, G. March 11, 1929. Producers.-Gaseous mixtures of hydrogen and carbon monoxide suitable for the synthesis of hydrocarbons, methanol, and other oxy-organic compounds are made by passing a mixture of oxygen and water vapour (in the proportion of not more than one volume of oxygen to two volumes of water vapour) over carbon at a temperature not exceeding 750‹ C. and removing the carbon dioxide. The mixture thus obtained contains two volumes of hydrogen to one of carbon monoxide, but by preheating the oxygen and water vapour and working at below 700‹ C., a mixture of three volumes of hydrogen to one of carbon monoxide is obtained. A pressure higher than atmospheric, but not exceeding 15 to 20 atmospheres, may be employed. From this mixture methane may be obtained catalytically. Specification 304,760 is referred to. |
