Disclosed are a multi-mode base station control method and a base station, which relate to the technical field of communications, and can realize real-time control of the energy transmitted by the base station, so as to improve the network efficiency. The method comprises: a base station starting service coverage of a first model provided for a user by a passive antenna; the base station detecting the average traffic of a cell under the current state; when the average traffic of the cell under the current state exceeds a pre-set first threshold value, starting capacity coverage of a second model provided for the user, and switching the active antenna of the base station to an on-state according to the capacity coverage of the second model provided for the user.
