A turbocharger has a casing system which houses a centrifugal compressor impeller. The casing system includes an insert casing 27 which feeds air to the impeller, and a volute casing 26 which receives compressed air from the impeller. The casing system further includes a main casing 28 which forms a housing. The impeller includes a hub 21 which has a radially outer annular rim 22, and a plurality of circumferentially arranged vanes 36 on a front face of the hub. The casing system further includes a seal plate 29 which sealingly interacts with the impeller. The seal plate extends inboard from the rim to an attachment flange which attaches to the main casing. The thickness of the seal plate is narrowed in an annular waist region adjacent the rim. The thickness W of the waist region is less than 2.5 times the minimum thickness R, as measured in the axial direction, of the rim.
