[Classes 120 (i) and 120 (iii)] A sliver of fibrous material is condensed by passing it between a pair of condensing rolls having a mating tongue and groove after the sliver has been reduced in width to substantially the width of the groove and allowed to expand in a transverse direction, and in passing through the rolls is condensed between the tongue and groove in said transverse direction ; the condensed sliver may be passed into a can by a coiler on which the condensing rolls are mounted and confining it from upward movement so that it is compressed in the can, As shown, the rolls 30, 31, with the tongue 32 on the roll 30 mating with the groove 33 in the roll 31, are mounted in the coiler head D and the sliver, after passing through a trumpet 11 in the cover 20, passes through a narrow slot formed by the depending walls 44 of a funnel 43 mounted above the rolls with the lower edges of the walls shaped to the surface of the rolls and the tongue 32 disposed between them. The ribbon of sliver emerging from the funnel is then con. densed sideways by the rolls, which are pressed together by a spring. 37, and passes into the coiler tube mounted on a gear in the bottom of the coiler part 15 and driven from a vertical shaft in the column 9 ; as the can E is filled, the sliver presses against the gear which engages pads on the underside of the part 15 of the coiler or with a pivoted shoe mounted on a bracket depending from the top of the part 15 so that the sliver becomes compressed in the can. |
