MICROWIRES, METHODS FOR THEIR PRODUCTION, AND PRODUCTS MADE USING THEM

A method for making an insulated microwire is described herein. The microwire consists of an electrically conductive metallic core and an insulative polymer sheath. The method includes the step of selecting a metal of suitably high electrical conductivity and of relatively low melting point. The method includes the further step of selecting a polymer of relatively high melting point. The method also includes the step of disposing at least one solid member of the metal in one or more bores in a solid member of the polymer. A further step includes heating the metal and the polymer such that the metal is substantially liquified while the polymer is softened. Another step includes codrawing the polymer and the metal simultaneously, such that the polymer forms an elongated tube sheathing a continuous filament of the metal.
