A method of fabricating a negative active material for a rechargeable lithium battery, the method comprising: mixing a core material, an organic solvent, a base, and water to provide a core solution, the core material being selected from the group consisting of Si oxides, Sn, Sn oxides, composite tin alloys, transition metal oxides, lithium metal nitrides, lithium metal oxides, lithium metal alloys, and combinations thereof; mixing an organic-inorganic hybrid precursor, an organic solvent, and water to provide a precursor solution; and mixing the core solution with the precursor solution to provide a negative active material comprising the core material and a coating layer having a reticular structure on the core material, the coating layer on the core material comprising a plurality of -M-O-M- units, wherein M is selected from the group consisting of Si, Ti and Al, and M is bonded to a side chain comprising an organic functional group represented by R1—CH═CR2—(R3)m—(R4)n—, wherein R1 and R2 are independently selected from the group consisting of H, CH3 and CH2CH3, R3 is CO2, R4 is selected from the group consisting of CH2 and CH2CH2O, m is selected from the group consisting of 0 and 1, and n ranges from 1 to 5.
