333,547. Hughes, G. E., Waring, A. H., Braham, J. E., and Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. Feb. 14, 1929. Distilling water; multipleeffect apparatus; film evaporators.-Pure distilled water is produced by exposing in one effect a plurality of falling films of impure water to indirect heating by steam, leading the condensed steam to a flash boiler where its pressure is reduced, mixing the steam thus produced with the steam evolved from the falling films, and passing the mixture to the next effect. Each effect comprises a shell 1 containing a nest of steam tubes 2 extending between headers 3, 4. The impure water is pumped through a pipe 25 to a reservoir 7 from which it is delivered through syphon pipes 8 to distributors 9. A battery of three such evaporators 12, 13, 14 in multiple effect is shown in Fig. 3 the course of the impure water after passing through the de-aerator 16 being indicated in dotted lines, the course of the distilled water in thin lines, the course of the steam in double lines and the course of the condensing water in thick lines. The condensate from each effect is passed to flash boilers 18. 13. 20 and blow down lines 21, 22, 23 are provided. Pure water is finally obtained in the condenser 15. Specification 279,526 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
