PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method for monitoring a surrounding area in which the calculation amount in detecting an object is reduced, and an increase of an estimation error of the object and occurrence of situation of disability in calculation can be prevented, and furthermore to provide a drive supporting device capable of performing drive support based on the existence of the object. SOLUTION: A vehicle driving ECU1 detects and recognizes obstacles around a vehicle and performs drive support such as setting of an avoidance route based on the recognized obstacles. When a grid larger than an intermediate value in recognition reliability exists between a maximum value grid which is a maximum value in the recognition reliability and a vehicle grid in detecting the obstacles, the recognition reliability of the grid is corrected to a minimum value by being regarded as the grid showing a false obstacle.
