An aircraft comprises a Rubens' tube for distributing gas within the aircraft. Typically the Rubens' tube is arranged to feed an inerting gas into the ullage of a fuel tank 11,12 of the aircraft. The fuel tanks are divided up into compartments 11a-11f and 12a-12f with passages to allow fuel to flow between them. As the aircraft ascends and descends pressure differentials between inside the tank and atmosphere change allowing air to enter of exit the tanks via vents (21,22 fig 3). The air needs to be replaced by an inerting gas. The Rubens' tube comprises a tube 30 with a plurality of outlets along its length, an inlet 31 for feeding the gas into the tube and a loudspeaker 33 arranged to set up a standing acoustic wave within the tube. Gas outflow from the outlets can be controlled by tuning the standing wave by adjusting the frequency of the sound. |
