A startup control device for an internal combustion engine, which cranks the internal combustion engine with combustion pressure generated by supplying fuel to the air cylinders in the expansion stroke and igniting that fuel, and which uses an electric motor to assist in the cranking, thereby starting the internal combustion engine by means of cranking torque from the combustion pressure and assist torque from the electric motor. This startup control device for an internal combustion engine executes the combustion in the air cylinders in the expansion stroke with a timing such that less assist torque is required for starting the internal combustion engine.
