PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optical fiber preform suitable for producing an optical fiber containing a plurality of cavities extending in a longitudinal direction and having desired properties at high yield and low cost. SOLUTION: The method for producing the optical fiber preform comprises (1) a drilling step to form cavities by drilling a glass material comprising a core region and a clad region, (2) a drawing step to form a glass rod 1 by heating and drawing the drilled glass material, (3) a deposition step to deposit fine silica particles on the outer circumference of the glass rod 1 obtained by the drawing step, (4) a sintering step to sinter and vitrify the deposited fine silica particles 5 obtained by the deposition step on the outer circumference of the glass rod 1, and (5) an opening step to open the cavities of the glass rod 1 at the lower end 1a of the glass rod 1 before the sintering step and connect the inner space of the cavity to the outer space of the cavity.
