341,879. Rudders and rudder posts. TELFER, E. V., 5, St. Nicholas Buildings, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Aug. 9, 1929, No. 24384. [Classes 113 (ii) and 114.] In installations where the rudder and rudder post are combined for steering action the gaps between the rudder and rudder post are stream lined and directed at angles to conform with the .transverse or rotational components of the propeller slip stream. The rudder post 7 and the rudder 14 have gaps between pintles 16, which are faired off as at 7, 12, to provide stream line surfaces for the propeller slip stream. In addition there are secured to or integral with the rudder post forward members 9, which are also or may be directed in the line of the slip stream. These forward vanes may also have slots 20, provided with plates 21, similarly directed. The vanes may be of greater width at the propeller axis diminishing gradually outwardly therefrom, and are of lesser width below the propeller axis than above, also they may carry at the propeller axis horizontal vanes 18 and at this position a fairing for the boss. A horizontal plate 19 may be fitted to the lower edge of the rudder. For producing the slots 20 an oxyacetylene flame may be used for cutting or burning them out.
