Porous block nanofiber composite filters

Disclosed is a porous block nano-fiber composite comprising: a porous block having one or more pores; and a plurality of inorganic nano-fibers formed within at least one of the pores of the porous block. Also disclosed is the method for making a porous block and a filtering system for filtering out heavy metals and pathogens comprising a porous block. The preferred porous block is a carbon porous block and the nanofibers are preferably formed from at least one of: an aluminate, a titanate, and an inorganic oxide.
