The present invention relates to an air-breathing fuel cell system, and an operating method thereof, in which the air-breathing fuel cell system comprises an electric generation unit including a membrane-electrode assembly, which includes an anode, an ion conductive membrane and a cathode, and causes an electric generating reaction, and bipolar plates equipped on both sides of the membrane-electrode assembly; a fuel supply unit for supplying fuel including hydrogen (H2) to the electric generating unit; a fuel supply control unit for selectively supplying the fuel supplied from the fuel supply unit to the electric generation unit; a cooling fan for cooling the heat generated in the electric generation unit; a pressure control valve for lowering the pressure by purging gas in the electric generation unit when the pressure of the electric generation unit becomes higher than the reference pressure; and a fuel cell control unit for controlling the operation of the cooling fan and the fuel supply control unit. According to the present invention, the air-breathing fuel cell system has an air-breathing structure that the outside air can freely pass through a channel, a space between ribs formed on the bipolar plates, and the air introduced through the channel of the bipolar plates is directly introduced and causes the reaction. The air-breathing fuel cell system requires no oxidant supply device, thereby lowering the production costs and the electric consumption, and manufacturing in a small scale. |
