[Class 46.] The bottom of a c a ing containing vertical filter leaves is formed as a sump to receive matter dislodged from the leaves, and is provided with means for filtering and draining off residual liquid. This means may comprise one or more auxiliary filters or one or more of the vertical filter leaves may project downwardly into the sump. As shown in Fig. 4 a sump 9 is formed below filter leaves 7 by sloping bases 1a, 3a, of a fixed part 1 of the casing and of a hinged door 3, which may be locked together as described in Specification 338,510, [Class 46, Filtering &c.]. The leaves 7 are supported by bolts 8 from a header 6, which has compartments 6a, 6b receiving filtrate separately from the upper and lower portions of the filter leaves through pipes 19, 20 respectively. The filtrate passes from the compartments 6a, 6b to a discharge main 22. The material under treatment is supplied to the casing through a pipe 11, a passage 14, formed between the meeting edges of the casing 1 and cover 3, and a slit 15. A spreader 16, preferably supported from the cover 3, is arranged above the slit 15. Air under pressure may be admitted through a valve 35 into the pipe 11 to assist in forcing the liquid through the leaves and in drying the leaves. Compressed air may also be admitted to the casing through a pipe 36 and valve 37 to force residual liquid back through the feed pipe before the door 3 is opened. An auxiliary filter 23 is provided in the sump 9. It may comprise, like the elements 7, a coarse gauze 25, Fig. 6, with fine mesh 24 on either side. The filtrate passes from the interior through a tube 27 and an annular passage in a sleeve 28 to the interior of a pipe 30, which is screwed into an outlet passage 29 in the casing 1, and which communicates by a tube 31 with the main 22. The element is placed in position by sliding the sleeve 28 over the tube 30 and is fixed by means of a thumb-screw 33 which screws into the end of the tube 30. Fig. 8 shows a modified arrangement in which two auxiliary filter elements 23a, 23b, are arranged transversely to the tube 30 and extend across the casing below the leaves 7. Each element comprises a boss 38 which is held between rings 39 on a sleeve 28b. The weight of the leaves 7 may be taken by runners 40, Fig. 13, bolted to the underside of the header 6. Flanges 10a on the bosses 10 of the leaves 7 engage with the runners. The flanges 10a and the runners 40 may have inclined faces so that the bosses 10 are brought into tight engagement with the header 6 as the leaves slide into position. |
