An image reader includes: an opening and closing unit which is formed to be rotatable around a hinge shaft; a pressing unit which is formed to press the opening and closing unit in order to generate a hinge shaft rotating moment which is higher than the moment of a hinge shaft rotation caused by the weight of the opening and closing unit in a state in which the opening and closing unit is arranged in a range from a closed position to a predetermined rotation angle about the main body of the reader and in order to generate a hinge shaft rotating moment which forms a balance with the moment of a hinge shaft rotation caused by the weight of the opening and closing unit in a state in which the opening and closing unit is open more than a predetermined rotation angle; and a holding unit which is formed to hold the opening and closing unit at the closed position. |
