Using an alias volume name for a volume to allocate space to a data set

Provided are a computer program product, system, and method for using an alias volume name for a volume to allocate space to a data set. An assignment of a plurality of volumes to a data set is maintained, wherein the volumes are configured in a storage system. A request is received to extend the data set. A determination is made as to whether one of the volumes previously assigned to the data set has an allocation amount of available space in the storage system in response to the request to extend the data set. An alias volume name is assigned to the data set for the previously assigned volume determined to have the allocation amount of available space, wherein the alias volume name provides an alternative name for the previously assigned volume. The allocation amount of available space is assigned to the data set for the alias volume name.

1. A computer program product to allocate space in volumes to data sets in a storage system, the computer program product comprising a computer readable storage medium having computer readable program code embodied therein that executes to perform operations, the operations comprising:
maintaining an assignment of a plurality of volumes to a data set, wherein the volumes are configured in the storage system; receiving a request to extend the data set; determining whether one of the volumes previously assigned to the data set has an allocation amount of available space in the storage system in response to the request to extend the data set; assigning an alias volume name to the data set for the previously assigned volume determined to have the allocation amount of available space, wherein the alias volume name provides an alternative name for the previously assigned volume; and assigning the allocation amount of available space to the data set for the alias volume name.
