A bisphosphonate of the general formula I wherein residues A independently of each other represent a proton or a monovalent metal cation; X represents a straight-chain or branched alkylene bridge; Z represents H or a 5- or 6-membered carbo- or heterocyclic, optionally mono- or poly-substituted ring, and R4 represents hydrogen, halogen, amino, hydroxy, trifluoromethyl, linear or branched alkyl, linear or branched alkoxy or bromovinyl.
