发明名称 Asphalt shingle, roof covering therewith and method of making the same with synchronized adhesive positioning thereon
摘要 An asphalt shingle is provided, in which a base mat is impregnated with an asphalt material and has headlap and tab portions, with the tab portion being a plurality of tabs separated by slots, with adhesive applied to the top surface of the shingle in the headlap portion and above the upper ends of the slots, but wherein the headlap portion of the shingle has adhesive-free zones above the centers of the tabs.;A roof covering is provided with the shingles being in overlying and underlying courses, with shingles in each course being laterally offset and with the adhesive-free zones being such that no adhesive on a shingle in an underlying course is visible through slots of shingles in a next-overlying course.;The method of making the asphalt shingles includes applying a substrate to a layer of shingle-forming material, the substrate having indicators at predetermined spaced-apart distances, with the indicators being sensed as the shingle-forming layer is moved along a predetermined path, with adhesive zones being applied to the shingle such that the application of the adhesive zones is synchronized in response to sensing the locations of the indicators, and with the shingle-forming layer then being cut into individual shingles.

主权项 1. A single layer asphalt shingle having upper and lower edges spaced apart transversely and right and left edges spaced apart longitudinally, and comprising: (a) a base mat impregnated with an asphalt material and having top and bottom surfaces; (b) a layer of particulate material on the top surface; (c) the shingle having a headlap portion normally covered and not weather-exposed in an installed condition; (d) the shingle having a tab portion normally uncovered and weather-exposed in the installed condition; (e) the tab portion comprising a plurality of tabs having longitudinally spaced apart edges on opposite sides of tab centers and extending from the headlap portion to a lower edge of the shingle; (f) a plurality of slots of a length L and width W extending from the lower edge of the shingle to the headlap portion and separating adjacent tabs in spaced-apart relation; (g) adhesive zones on a top surface of the shingle; (h) said adhesive zones being in the headlap portion of the shingle in two vertically spaced-apart rows, comprising an upper row and a lower row, wherein each row is comprised of a plurality of spaced-apart zones of adhesive, with adhesive-free zones between the spaced-apart zones of adhesive in each row above the centers of the tabs; and (i) said shingle having on its top surface, said adhesive-free zones, with each of said adhesive-free zones being of at least said transverse length L and of at least a longitudinal said width W in the headlap portion above the centers of the tabs; (j) with the lower row of said adhesive zones comprising a plurality of pairs of adhesive strips, with adhesive strips in each pair of strips being laterally spaced apart, leaving a space therebetween above the center of one of said slots that is free of adhesive, to comprise a fastening zone means for placement of a fastener through the shingle headlap portion between strips in each pair of strips, directly above the center of each said slot; with the upper row of said adhesive zones comprising a plurality of laterally spaced-apart upper adhesive strips; each upper adhesive strip extending above the center of one of said slot and above a pair of adjacent tab portions for approximately equal lateral distances; and (k) whereby, when a plurality of said shingles are laid up in courses on a roof, with shingles in the same course being laid with their right and left edges adjacent to right and left edges of other of said shingles and wherein shingles in overlying courses are offset longitudinally relative to shingles in next-underlying courses, with tabs of shingles in overlying courses covering adhesive zones in headlap portions of shingles in next-underlying courses and leaving uncovered the adhesive-free zones in headlap portions of shingles in next-underlying courses, comprising means whereby no adhesive of a shingle of an underlying course is visible through slots of shingles in a next-overlying course.
