The present invention provides a washing machine and a control method thereof. The washing machine comprises a rotary drum; a pulsator which is installed on the lower part of the rotary drum and generates a water current; and a driving device rotating the rotary drum or the pulsator. The driving device includes a motor generating rotational power to rotate the rotary drum or the pulsator; a dehydration shaft transmitting the rotational power of the motor to the rotary drum; a washing shaft transmitting the rotational power of the motor to the pulsator; a brake assembly stopping the rotation of the dehydration shaft; and a motor driving circuit supplying a motor driving current to the motor. The dehydration shaft and the washing shaft are provided on a rotary shaft which is the center of rotation of the motor. The motor driving circuit switches off multiple coils included in the motor to stop the rotation of the motor. The brake assembly is capable of stably and quickly stopping the rotation of the motor by turning off the power after shorting the coils of the motor, when a dehydration cycle of the washing machine in contact with the dehydration shaft terminates.
