[Class 40 (iv).] An electric amplifier comprises an anode, a cathode with an electronically active layer or body situated between them and associated with a control grid, and an electron-carrying material of any desired resistance interposed between the active layer and the anode. The amplifier is used in the same way as a thermionic valve amplifier and may have more than one grid. In the solid type shown in Fig. 1, the amplifier comprises a metal cathode a, an active layer b, an electron-carrying layer c of high resistance, and a metal anode d. The grid e may be arranged in or on the surface of active layer b, e.g. the grid may be coated with an active paste or by electro-deposition. The active layer may comprise copper oxide or lead sulphide, and the electron-carrier may be an oxide, iodide, proto-iodide in solid or compressed powder form. Two grids may be inserted in an active layer, or the upper and lower surfaces of the layer may each have a grid associated with them, a further layer of electron carrier being interposed between the lower grid and the cathode. The amplifier may be enclosed in an insulated container. In the electrolytic form shown in Fig. 2, an active body k connected to the cathode terminal is placed in an electrolyte i, and the containing vessel l constitutes the anode. The grid e, as shown, is placed in the electrolyte some distance from the body k, but it may be close to or on the body k. The electrolyte, which may be in paste form, may consist of acids, caustic potash or salts such as are used in electrolytic rectifiers. Two or more grids may be used by separating them by porous pots containing different electrolytes.</p>
