The method involves assessing (102) an error (epsilon) by subtracting a set of state value (Qcons) from a state value (Qcal) calculated or measured from a pressure (P) inside an engine cylinder block when an internal combustion engine runs in higher richness or equal to a unit value. A control (Cr) of a recirculation valve is developed (105), so as to reduce the error, and an exhaust gas recirculation system fault is reported (106) if the error exceeds an interval of tolerance (epsilon min, epsilon max) where the calculated state value is equal to cumulated energy release by a driving cycle. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program for diagnosing an exhaust gas recirculation system in an internal combustion engine (2) an exhaust gas recirculation system in an internal combustion engine. |
