[Class 22.] Blast furnace slag or similar fused material is treated to obtain a highly porous, cellular, light, dry product by passing the molten slag into a trough through which water or other liquid is flowing, part of the trough having a downwardly curved formation so that in this part the inclination increases as the force and amount of the water diminishes. Slag passes from a furnace d down a fireproof channel e into a trough a having a very short straight part and a downwardly curved part f. Below the mouth of the channel e is a fireproof inclined plane b, which may be water cooled, on to which the molten slag falls. Water or other liquid is passed into the trough a either above or beneath the inclined plane b. The porous mass is moved along the straight part of the trough a by the liquid and then falls down the part f under gravity into a pit g from which it is removed by an elevator c to breaking and sorting devices. The curved part of the trough is continued inwardly from the point at which the porous mass falls to remove any water which may be at the bottom of the trough and the pit g has a perforated bottom through which water drains to a sump h from which it is recovered by a pump k and pipe l.</p>
