<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device exhibiting image characteristics with high contrast and a wide viewing angle and fast in-plane switching and permitting display of moving images.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device is driven by a linear coupling such as ferroelectric coupling and/or flexoelectric coupling between an inhomogeneous in-plane electric field generated by an electrode pattern 41, 42 over a first sub-volume of a bulk layer 44 adjacent to the electrode pattern 41, 42 and liquid crystals in a polarized state included in the first sub-volume and/or in an alignment layer 43 applied on the electrode pattern 41, 42. The polarization is stronger than any liquid crystal polarization of the bulk layer, outside (i) the first sub-volume and the alignment layer (43), and outside (ii) a second sub-volume of the bulk layer adjacent to an inner surface of the other substrate, or a second alignment layer or a second electrode pattern applied thereon.</p> |
