The invention relates to a method and apparatus for serial data transmission between a basic module (1) and an expansion module (2, 3). In order to allow improved data transmission for a data packet between a basic module (1) and an expansion module (2, 3), it is proposed that the basic module (1) and the first expansion module (2) each comprise a first system interface (11, 21) that has four pins (7) as a serial peripheral interface and two pins (8) as a UART interface or as an I2C interface, wherein the data transmission between the basic module (1) and the first expansion module (2) is cyclic data transmission via the serial peripheral interface and acyclic data transmission via the UART interface or I2C interface, wherein the interchange of a data packet from the basic module (1) to the first expansion module (2) involves the basic module (1) using at least one control bit in the cyclic data transmission with the first expansion module (2) to indicate to the first expansion module (2) that the acyclic data transmission is used to transmit a data packet to the first expansion module (2), and then transmitting the data packet to the first expansion module (2) using the acyclic data transmission. |
