PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nickel oxide powder which has a low impurity content and is a fine powder, and is suitable as an electronic component material.SOLUTION: A nickel oxide powder has a specific surface area of 5.5 m/g or more, and the content of chlorine, sulfur, and alkali metals in the nickel powder is 20 mass ppm or less. The nickel oxide powder is produced by: neutralizing a nickel salt mixed aqueous solution of nickel sulfate and nickel chloride to a pH of 8.3-9.0 with an alkali to crystallize nickel hydroxide; washing the obtained nickel hydroxide with water having a temperature lower than 30°C and water having a temperature equal to or higher than 30°C, and preferably washing the obtained nickel hydroxide with a sodium hydroxide aqueous solution having a temperature equal to or higher than 30°C between the water washing operations; and then heat-treating the obtained nickel hydroxide at 700-980°C in a non-reducing atmosphere. |
