A security device 1 comprises: a housing 2; a cable 6 extending from the housing for placement around an object; a spool (8,fig.2) rotatably mounted on the housing 2, the cable 6 being attached to the spool such that rotation of the spool in a first direction causes the cable to unwind from the spool permitting placement of the cable around said object, and rotation of the spool in a second, opposite direction causes tightening of the cable around the object; a latch (38,fig.2) movable between a first position in which the spool is able to rotate freely in both the first and second directions, and a second position in which the spool is able to rotate in the first direction only; and retracting means (30,fig.2) arranged to apply a biasing force to the spool to urge it to rotate in said second direction when the latch is in the first position. The security device may include an alarm means such as an EAS tag whereby an alarm may be triggered if the cable 6 is cut. The retracting means may comprise a flat section torsion or coil spring. The latch may comprise a ratchet mechanism. |
